  • Alexander I of Serbia took over the throne at the young age of 16. Draga Masin was a widow, married at 16 and divorced at 18 who served as a lady-in-waiting to the queen. The two fell hopelessly in love. She was intelligent, fairly wealthy and beautiful but she was a commoner, a widow and much older than him.  Despite protests and hurdles, they got engaged and married in1900 when she was 38 and he was 23. When the queen chose to disapprove of their betrothal, King Alexander I banished her from the kingdom. After just a mere two years of marriage, the two were assassinated in their home due to disproval from the masses. A love story that ended sad, but a true example of strong love nonetheless.
  • Another love story that stood the tests of time is that of Napoloen and Josephine’s. She was married at nineteen, had two children and was divorced when she met the great Napoleon around the year 1795. He was madly in love with her and sent her emotionally charged love letters that survives till date. Against family’s repeated pleas and various undesirable circumstances, they tied the knot on March 9, 1796. He left for Italy soon after and though they communicated through letters, Josephine was much distracted. After hearing rumors of her affairs and constantly denying of them, he eventually despairs and starts having affairs himself.  They finally divorce on January 1810. But it’s said, until death, he truly loved her only and his last words were, “France, the Army, the Head of the Army, Josephine.”
  • The son of an emperor, Shah Jahan was one born with a golden spoon. Mumtaz Mahal, was a Muslim Persian princess and one that possessed great, enchanting beauty. He was cast on her spell at first sight in the year 1607. At that time, he was 14, she was 15, and he had decided and proclaimed to his father that he wanted to marry her and they tied the knot 5 years later. He had other wives as was the custom but Mumtaz was his favorite and he loved her dearly but alas, she breathed her last while giving birth to their 14th child. On her deathbed, the emperor promised to build a large mausoleum over her grave. Staying true to his words, his love borne out one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal after 22 years and 22, 000 workers. Rumor has it that when his son Aurangzeb put Shah Jahan under house arrest in the Red Fort he would sit by the window where he could get a good view of the Taj Mahal and gaze at it everyday.
